Traditional
games are part of one’s heritage and cultural traditional which should be
preserved but with the passing of time, they are slowly being forgotten and are
not passed down to younger generations. There are various traditional games
that have existed for a long time such as Congkak (filling the wooden board),
Sepak Takraw (kicking the rattan ball), Wau (kite flying), Gasing (spinning
top), Batu Seremban (tossing the stone) and many more. These games not only
entertain but also foster social interaction, team work, physical exercise,
talking, laughing and sharing experiences. All of these are essential to their
growing up. Children who grow up in societies that value traditional games tend
to have better social skills, higher self-esteem and a more positive outlook in
life also teaching them teamwork, leadership and problem solving skills.
On
this globalization world, the traditional games forgotten because of science
and technology development. The traditional games now was overlooked by young
generations, the ignored and do not show any interest on this kind of games.
They prefer electronic things such computer game, phone and television. Some of
young generation do not know what the traditional game is. The campaign to
bring back traditional games is not only the ‘games’ but it can lead to the
loss of cultural identity, the loss of social cohesion and the erosion of
important skills and keep them alive for future generations.
